Life in the Spirit: A Few Important Things You Need to Know

Here are a three very important things that you need to know about life in the Spirit

1. Do you know what it means to be living in the Spirit.

The Bible tells us that they that are in the flesh cannot please God. We see this in Romans 8:8: “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Paul goes on later in verse 9 to say that living in the Spirit means that you have put away the things of the flesh, such as the carnal way of thinking and have decided to take on a life where you are full of the Holy Spirit. (But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his – Romans 8:9). In other words you are living in God or with God’s Spirit on the inside, when you are living in the Spirit.

Therefore, when you are living in the Spirit this means that:

  • You have made a decision to accept the Holy Spirit to be an integral part of your life. Why is this so important? According to Galatians 5: 19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”. A life with these works of the flesh only leads us directly to hell. On the other hand, a life in/with the Spirit, honors God. We see the characteristics of this type of life described in Galatians 5:22-23 says: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

2. Did you know that as you live in the spirit, your view of the things must change?

Ephesians 6:12 says: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

There are a set of spiritual forces that come against us in every area of life. There is a demonic war against our lives and the devil will use whoever he will to come against us.

Therefore when we live in the Spirit, we see in the spirit and realise that whatever comes up against, is not an attack on our flesh, but rather something deeper that is happening on a spiritual level.

3. Did you know that there is a set of Spiritual ammunition that help you fight in the Spirit in order to destroy all spiritual/demonic/fleshy attacks?

Our response must therefore be a spiritual response, where we employ the Holy Spirit and His ammunition to help us.

This ammunition is seen in Ephesians 6:13-18:

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

If you remember nothing that I have said in this article, remember this one thing:

If we are living in the flesh (carnal way of life and living in sin) we cannot please God. We have been originally made for God’s pleasure, so if our lives are not pleasurable towards Gods, then this is time for a change. It is time to get back to the original plan for our lives which God has set out. Yes, because we live in a sinful and fallen world, our flesh adopts that nature, but today is the day to make the decision to come back to Christ and live His original plan for us, which is to live in the Spirit, so that we can shun the pits of hell and ultimately have everlasting life.

Surviving Life’s Challenges

Today’s sermon was indeed based on yet another interesting topic:  Surviving Life’s Challengeschallenges

There are so many challenges which we experience on a daily basis; whether it be at work, at home or even at church. Life is just full of challenges.

God never told us it would be easy, but in His Word He gives us some instructions on how to deal with our challenges.

Today, Pastor Murrell (Pegwell Community Church) pointed out some of the verses in the Word and gave some very helpful tips to surviving life’s challenges and I find these to be excellent tips because  I can identify with many of them and indeed they have been useful and continue to be useful to the challenges which I battle on a daily basis.

I do not know what challenges you have but here are some tips to overcoming them:

  • Eliminate the word “PROBLEM” out of your vocabulary – See every “problem” as a challenge and not as a problem and never give up. Remember that with God all things are possible (Mark 9:23, Mark 10:27, Mark 14:36)
  • Always put God first
  • Don’t demand to understand what is going on in your life – Very often we ask: Why me? But only further down the road we see what God was protecting us for or preparing us for to even make us stronger. So it is important to trust in God for He knows what he has planned for you, He knows what type of character he wants to develop in you. (Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future“.
  • Be faithful even in the unfair situation
  • Trust God’s timing
  • Don’t let people disillusion you
  • Learn to accept the circumstances which you are dealing with – Don’t get negative as this will not change anything or make anything better.
  • Reverse the negative thought pattern that you are stuck where you are – The Bible tells us that words carry life. Begin right away to speak life into your life, marriage, situation or even church to see change. (Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof”). Yours words are carriers, so let’s begin to not only think but say positive things into our lives and the lives of others
  • Be careful who is close to you hen you are in trouble or in difficult situations – There are people who have nothing good to say at any time so we must ensure that we do not draw close to these sort of people when we are in any situation whether good or bad
  • If you want to be it, you have to see it – See yourself in your dream and you will become what you desire
  • Live in gratitude – Have the mindset of appreciation and practise the attitude of gratitude – The pastor made reference to the ‘Feed the Children’ programme – We have so much and we don’t show any gratitude, but now is the time to be thankful for what we have. Even at a time when we ‘ have much we should also be thankful because God tells us in everything gives thanks. (1 Thess 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you)
  • Develop a personal safety net – This is a cadre of people  that you can call upon in difficult or down times. These would be positive people who would be able to strengthen your life with the help of God. Following are some situations in which you would need a safety net:
  1. An unexpected accident
  2. A transfer or move form one particular locality or employment
  3. A crisis for your parents, children or other members of your family
  4. A major job change
  5. During the period of a divorce and the things which follow
  6. When a disaster in your community or country occurs

I hope that these points have been useful to you in better understanding how to deal with the challenges which you encounter.

I urge you to use some of these tips ; act on them and integrate them into your prayer life and you will become a greater conqueror.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT

More food for thought!

If you have been keeping track of my blog posts you would see that I am really focusing on the need for us to begin a journey of discovering God’s has planned for our lives in 2009 and beyond. In doing this, there is definitely a need for us to come away from worldly thinking and living and get into a deeper relationship with God. A deeper relationship can be developed through reading the Bible and speaking with God through prayer in order to develop our faith in Him. Just as we may spend time with that special some one to get to know him or her better, we must spend time with God.

Here’s one way to start opening up your heart and soul to discovering God’s plan and it involves basically changing the way you think. It will not be easy in the beginning (I know oh too well), but I have found that continuous pray breaks down every wall and strong hold. You will not be able to see your usual stresses in a good light, but by getting into a close relationship with God, He will show you how to deal with as well as perceive these stresses in a positive light.

Tim Sanders, author of Saving the World at Work: What Companies and Individuals Can Do to Go Beyond Making a Profit to Making a Difference, has hit the nail on the head in his article “Attitude Adjustment”. The article, although written from a business point of view, be applied to your personal spiritual life.

Very often we look at certain things which do not necessarily fall into our daily duties and we somehow get so upset and complain about these things without analyzing the situation to realise that some “have to’s” can be converted into your “get-to’s”, according to Sanders,.

In a previous post, I would made mention of our need to become more positive in our thinking. So from now on, adjust your attitude, remember what God has promised and change all your “have to’s” into “get to’s” for 2009 and beyond.

  • Ephesians 1:15
  • Romans 12
  • Proverbs 3:9-10
  • Jerimiah 29: 1-11
